Seven years ago, Dawang and his wife, Dongla had some sick yak meat. A wart started to grow on Dawang’s left leg and on Dongla’s left breast which swelled to a thickness like a bucket. The doctors misdiagnosed the disease and had Dawang's leg and Dongla’s breast amputated without being giving examination. They lost the earning capacity and the burden rested on their daughter Ladron’s shoulders by digging up cordyceps in summer. They are poverty-stricken, living only in an animal pen with nothing else but wheat flour bags, mud bed and yak dung.

Poverty-stricken, the Qiongsang family cannot even afford to live in a bigger tent than this little one as shown in the picture. The tent is very low and small, and they could not even stand straight inside the tent. They have to crouch to get inside it. When winter comes, Zhoucha, Qiongsang’s wife, and her children will have to cower inside the tent. Zhoucha said 1 year ago they had lived in another black tent but it was destroyed in a windstorm. Since then the family have been living in this small and low tent.
